Now in the second week of training camp, the biggest storyline for the Washington Commanders remains wide receiver Terry McLaurin. As he continues his “hold in,” one insider detailed the latest on negotiations.

McLaurin has remained adamant about signing a new deal before the 2025 season gets underway. Just ahead of his 30th birthday, he is eyeing an extension on par with some of the other top talents at his position.

Meanwhile, the Commanders are hesitant to give such a lucrative deal to a player entering the later stages of their career.

In light of the situation not getting any better, McLaurin put in an official trade request last week. However, Washington has made it clear they have no plans to honor and want to keep him around beyond this year.

NFL insider notes gap in contract talks between Terry McLaurin and the Commanders

While on ESPN’s Get Up Thursday, NFL insider Jeremy Fowler detailed the latest regarding Terry McLaurin and the Commanders. He stated there is still a sizable gap in contract talks, and that Washington continues to receive calls for the veteran wideout.

“They have been far apart. I’ll put it this way,” Fowler said. “He has wanted metrics of the DK Metcalf contract, which is $32 million. I’m told the Washington Commanders have only been slightly above where he was from before, which is $23 million. So take that gap, that’s $7 to 8 million that they have to bridge, and Washington, I’m told, has got some calls about McLaurin. There’s some interest league wide.”

Although he’ll be 30 before the season starts, McLaurin has still proven to be one of the NFL‘s most reliable receivers. Aside from catching a career-high 13 touchdowns last season, he broke the 1,000-yard mark for a fifth consecutive year.

Seeing that the two sides are still at odds when it comes to price, there is no telling when the McLaurin saga will come to an end. This ordeal dragging on is a tough blow for Washington, as it is stalling all the momentum they built in 2024.

Eager to remain a title threat with Jayden Daniels under center, the Commanders rectifying things with McLaurin is a top priority. They’ve already lost valuable time in camp, and cannot afford to still have him disengaged when the regular season rolls around.
