As the New York Giants get prepared for their first game of the 2025 NFL Preseason, the team has been dealing with a key absence in the backfield, as Cam Skattebo is experiencing a setback related to his hamstring.
While it doesn’t seem to be a significant setback, the rookie running back was still not seen at practice on Wednesday morning, according to The Athletic’s Dan Duggan.

Skattebo joins the Giants this season after a run at Arizona State. Last year, he appeared in 13 games, rushing 293 times for 1,711 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also caught 45 passes for over 600 yards and three touchdowns.
After racking up 4,386 yards and 43 touchdowns on the ground throughout four years in college, Skattebo became a fourth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. He was selected 105th overall by New York.
Considering the Giants don’t have a definitive feature back, the rookie seems to be on pace to play an important role in a potential committee situation during his first year in the pros. Unfortunately, his recent setback is taking him off track as the preseason approaches.
With Skattebo’s recent injury taking him off the field, the Giants worked out multiple running backs earlier this week. They decided to sign the veteran Jonathan Ward, who has stints with multiple teams.
After going undrafted out of Central Michigan in 2020, Ward started his career with the Arizona Cardinals. He joined the New York Jets’ practice squad in 2022 and landed on the Tennessee Titans after that.
Last season, Ward played for the Pittsburgh Steelers. This preseason, he’ll get a chance to compete for a roster spot on the Giants.
Ward’s availability for New York’s upcoming preseason is also up in the air. Not only did he just join the team and begin learning the playbook, but Ward was among several players who left practice early with an undisclosed setback. The injury doesn’t seem to be major, but it’s something the Giants might have to monitor.
On Saturday, the Giants are set to compete in their first preseason matchup. They will pay a visit to the Buffalo Bills for a 1 PM ET. Kickoff. Sakttebo’s playing status isn’t clear, but signs are pointing to the rookie running back missing that first matchup this upcoming weekend.
