Brewers All-Star Right-Hander Listed As Trade Candidate For Upcoming Offseason

The Milwaukee Brewers are heading toward the playoffs this season, and with their climb to the top of the National League Central, they avoided potentially dealing their ace, Freddy Peralta.

The offseason could be a different story for the longtime Brewer, as the team has shown their willingness to trade players entering a contract year, with the team trading Devin Williams and Corbin Burnes in the past. This puts Peralta at the top of names to watch this winter, according to R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports.

“Peralta has been a key part of the Brewers rotation for the past five years, but the reality of Milwaukee baseball is that they always have to account for the future,” Anderson wrote. “He’ll be entering his walk year, meaning a trade would follow in the cleatprints of the Corbin Burnes and Devin Williams deals, allowing the Brewers to recoup players who could help sooner than whomever they’d gain through draft-pick compensation. The Brewers don’t always move players before they hit the open market — Willy Adames was a notable exception — so it’s possible that they hold tight, but the precedent is there.”

Peralta has been a cornerstone of the Brewers’ rotation since his breakout in 2021, but with the emergence of rookie flamethrower Jacob Misiorowski, the Brewers could decide to move on from Peralta in the offseason.

Misiorowski has taken the league by storm, and has shown he is more than capable of taking on the role as ace of the staff. The rookie has a 2.70 ERA in seven starts and was, controversially, added to the National League All-Star team in his rookie season.

The Brewers have other options in the rotation for next season, including a mutual option with Brandon Woodruff. While there is no clear answer to whether the option will be picked up this winter, Woodruff would be able to fill out the Brewers’ rotation without Peralta in the clubhouse.

Anderson remarks that there is a chance that the Brewers do not trade Peralta in the winter, but the precedent is there for the Brewers to move on. If Peralta is made available, multiple teams will want to throw their hat in the ring and the Brewers could cycle in the next wave for their continued success.
