KYIV — The Russian army struck Lozova in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, killing one person and injuring others in what the local mayor called the “most massive attack since the beginning of the war.”

Lozova hosts a logistically important railway junction that is critical for the transportation of goods locally and into the front-line Donbas region.

“Critical infrastructure, high-rise buildings, private sector were damaged,” said mayor Serhii Zelenskiy. “Unfortunately, there are wounded — among them two children. Rescuers, medics, and emergency services are working. We are recording the consequences.”

Russian forces sent more than 30 drones to Lozova. Railway infrastructure, residential buildings, and a power plant were damaged. Local authorities are working to restore the water supply, and part of the city remains without electricity.

“A man died. Ten more people were injured or suffered acute stress. Among the victims were a 13-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy,” Kharkiv regional prosecutor’s office said in a morning statement.

The man killed was a mechanic at the local railway station — four more railway workers were wounded, Ukrainian state railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia said in a statement.

The attack severely damaged the central station, forcing Ukrainian Railways to redirect trains.

Besides Lozova, Russian forces also shelled in the Zaporizhzhia, Odesa and Sumy regions overnight, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a morning statement. The attacks took place three days before the deadline United States President Donald Trump has set for Russia’s President Vladimir Putin to stop the war and agree to a ceasefire.

“The world now sees that sanctions against Russia, and secondary sanctions against all those who help it profiteer from oil, can work if they are strong enough,” Zelenskyy said.

“Therefore, pressure must be increased, and this will undoubtedly contribute to peace. I thank the United States, our European partners, the G7 countries, and all those willing to exert the necessary pressure. We look forward to meaningful and decisive steps,” Zelenskyy added.
