Technicians with the Los Angeles Police Department’s bomb squad were below a 210 Freeway overpass in Sylmar on reports of alleged military ordnance spotted at the location Monday, authorities confirmed to KTLA.
According to police, officers responded to the 11800 block of Terra Bella just before 12:30 p.m., though they were unable to say what type of potential explosives or munitions were seen.
Aerial footage from Sky5 showed at least four LAPD cruisers near the overpass, with yellow crime scene tape cordoning off the area where the bomb squad was working.
No evacuations were ordered and authorities said there was no threat associated with the incident.
This is the third case of military ordnance found in Los Angeles County in little more than two weeks.
On July 18, a grenade believed to be inert killed three deputies with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department at the Biscailuz Regional Training Center in East L.A. The grenade and two others were found by a woman in Santa Monica the day before as she was cleaning out an apartment’s storage bin.
Investigators believe the grenades had been stolen from the U.S. military by a previously enlisted person. That case remains ongoing.
Just a week later, family members who were cleaning out the home of a deceased relative found what they believed to be military ordnance and brought the devices to LAPD’s Pacoima Station, prompting a bomb squad investigation with cooperation from the U.S. military.
Officials determined the items were safe to move, and the LAPD Bomb Squad packaged them for transport to a secure storage site. The U.S. military was expected to collect them at a later date.
