The New York Post is heading west.

The tabloid will launch The California Post in early 2026, the publication announced Monday.

“Los Angeles and California surely need a daily dose of The Post as an antidote to the jaundiced, jaded journalism that has sadly proliferated,” Robert Thomson, CEO of News Corp, the paper’s parent company, said in a statement.

The new venture, headquartered in Los Angeles, will feature a dedicated newsroom comprising editors, reporters, and photographers who will cover news, entertainment, politics, culture, sports, and business from a California perspective.

A daily print edition and dedicated digital platform will serve readers across the state, complemented by national and international coverage from the New York team.

Nick Papps has been named editor in chief. He has nearly two decades of experience and previously served as News Corp Australia’s West Coast correspondent while based in Los Angeles, according to the announcement.

The California expansion comes as the state gears up to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. The 2026 election cycle, including the race for governor, is also on the horizon.

According to the news company, The New York Post has 3.5 million monthly unique visitors in the Los Angeles area alone — and 7.3 million across California — making the state already represent The Post’s second-largest digital readership base outside New York.

The Post Digital Network, which includes NYPost.com, PageSix.com, and Decider.com, also attracted 90 million unique visitors in June, with roughly 90% of its digital audience living outside the New York market.

Founded in 1801 by Alexander Hamilton, The New York Post transitioned to a tabloid format in the mid-1900s. Rupert Murdoch acquired the publication in 1976 as part of his initial expansion into the American media industry.
