Lake Arrowhead | $895,000

A 1937 cabin, on 0.1 acres

This three-bedroom, two-bathroom house, which has been used as both a residence and a vacation rental property, is steps from Lake Arrowhead, and within walking distance of a small market, a handful of restaurants and a coffee stand operating out of a vintage trailer. By car, Lake Arrowhead Village, its restaurants, outlet shopping and supermarket, are five minutes away, as is a park with a playground.

Mojave River Forks Regional Park, which has hiking and equestrian trails, is a 40-minute drive and San Bernardino is less than an hour away. Los Angeles, by car, is less than two hours away.

Size: 1,162 square feet

Price per square foot: $770

Indoors: Steps lead from the street up to this home’s front patio, with another set continuing up to the covered porch.

Inside, the living room has high ceilings and walls covered with panels of knotty pine that are original to the house. The space has two separate sitting areas, one in front of a large window overlooking the patio. The other is anchored by a fireplace with a stone surround and mantel, also original to the house.

Through the living room is the updated kitchen, which has a built-in bench seat in one corner. The cabinets are painted green and the countertops are wood, and from here a door opens to a deck.

The primary suite is directly off the living room, with casement windows and wood paneling painted white. Its bathroom has a combined tub and shower and a vanity with a marble countertop. The other two bedrooms are upstairs, off a long hallway that looks down over the level below. Both bedrooms have pitched ceilings and windows that face the treetops outside. A bathroom is also off the hall, with a glass-door shower lined with white tile.

Outdoor space: A deck wraps from the side of the house to the front patio, which is lined with a wood fence. A fire pit is in front of the house and an outdoor dining table is set up next to the fence. An detached garage, at the street level, holds two cars.

Taxes: $11,184 (estimated)

Los Angeles | $889,000

A townhouse unit in a 1981 condominium complex

This two-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom unit is in the Skyline Townhome community, at the base of the Studio City side of the Hollywood Hills. A Mediterranean restaurant, a taqueria and a jazz club that has been open since 1970 are within walking distance. The Universal City complex, home to a theme park, an outdoor shopping center with a movie theater, and several large hotels, is a five-minute drive.

The Hollywood Bowl and the smaller Ford Amphitheater are both less than 10 minutes away by car, as is Fryman Canyon. Burbank is a 20-minute drive, and downtown Los Angeles takes 25 minutes.

Size: 1,511 square feet

Price per square foot: $588

Indoors: This unit’s front door opens to the kitchen, which has hardwood floors that continue into the living room. Here, steel-frame windows run from the floor to the ceiling and a fireplace has a mirrored surround. Space for a dining table is closer to the kitchen, where the appliances, including a gas range, are stainless steel. The cabinets, countertops, and backsplash have all recently been updated and there’s a garden window above the sink.

A powder room is directly off the entryway from which stairs lead to the second floor. At one end of a hall upstairs is the primary suite, where the bedroom, big enough for a king-size bed, has more steel-frame windows and a ceiling fan. The primary bathroom has a walk-in shower and a wood vanity with plenty of storage.

The second bedroom, at the other end of the hall, has its own balcony. Next door is a bathroom with a combined tub and shower. A closet with a stacked washer and dryer, and a built-in linen cabinet are accessible from the hall as well.

Outdoor space: The unit has two balconies, one on each level, and both are big enough to hold a set of chairs. The complex also has a swimming pool, and this unit comes with two parking spots in a secure garage.

Taxes: $11,112 (estimated), plus an $850 monthly homeowner’s association fee

Berkeley | $899,000

A split-level house built in 1927, on 0.1 acres

This three-bedroom, two-bathroom house is a few blocks from San Pablo Park, which has tennis courts and sports fields, and is a 20-minute walk from Berkeley Bowl West, an outpost of the locally-beloved grocery store. Also within walking distance is a busy stretch of University Avenue, home to a Target, a CVS, coffee shops, bakeries and restaurants. A public elementary school is five minutes away.

By car, Emeryville’s waterfront is 10 minutes away and downtown Oakland is a 15-minute drive. The nearest BART station is a mile away. Trains reach San Francisco in less than half an hour.

Size: 1,061 square feet

Price per square foot: $847

Indoors: Steps lead from the driveway to this home’s covered entryway, where a wood door opens to the living room. A curved wall, which has the appearance of a turret from the exterior, has four windows facing the street. A fireplace with a stone surround is painted white.

Through a wide doorway is the formal dining room with original molding. On the other side of the dining room is an eat-in kitchen, which has stainless steel appliances that include a dishwasher and a built-in microwave.

A primary bedroom with wide picture windows and a ceiling fan is at the front of the house. The bedroom fits a queen-size bed, and a full bathroom with a combined tub and shower is next door. Another full bathroom is off the kitchen, along with a bedroom currently set up as an office. From this part of the house a short set of stairs leads up to the third bedroom, where windows face the backyard.

Outdoor space: A wood pergola, with space for a dining table beneath it, extends from just behind the house into the backyard. At the far end of the yard is a detached studio space with a built-in Murphy bed. A one-car garage, now set up as a home gym, is attached.

Taxes: $11,232 (estimated)
