You know the phrase “long hair, don’t care”? I can confirm there’s some truth behind that statement, especially after testing a dozen of the best clip-in hair extensions. My realization: There’s a special kind of confidence that comes with longer, fuller hair. The best part is that clip-ins require no commitment, unlike bonded, tape-in, or other in-salon extensions.

After experimenting with a ton of different options, I landed on Cashmere Hair’s Seamless Clip-In Extensions as my favorite overall. They were easy to apply and blended in with my natural hair better than all the other options I tried. But if you’re looking for a halo, ponytail clip-in, or elusive curly-hair extensions, I found amazing options for you too.

Best Overall: Cashmere Hair Classic Clip-In Extensions

Cashmere Hair Classic Clip-In Extensions

$350

Cashmere Hair

  • Material: 100% Indian remy real human hair
  • Number of wefts: 7
  • Lengths: 12, 16, 18, 20, 22, and 24 inches
  • Shades: 21
  • Pros: Made with human hair; soft and shiny
  • Cons: Pricey

These were recommended to me by a friend who frequently wears clip-ins (and just wore them at her wedding). Not only are they seamless to apply and undetectable in appearance, but they’re made of 100% Indian remy real human hair, which means all the cuticles are running in the same direction. This translates into a super-high-quality product—smooth, shiny, and virtually tangle-proof. I got the 24-inch set in the color Rodeo Drive Blonde—but they have a good selection of hair colors from jet black to platinum blonde—and both the color and length blended in well with my hair. They come in six length options: 12, 16, 18, 20, 22, and 24; the shorter length you need, the cheaper the clip-ins are. I had another frontrunner in mind until I tried these—they’re that good. They felt utterly weightless in my hair but added unbelievable yet natural-looking fullness. Their ends were also the most natural-looking and blended in best with the rest of my hair, whereas some others look more blunt and fake. I felt like a whole new person with these: hotter, sassier, and overall more confident.

Best for Thin Hair: Zala Seamless Clip-In Vegan Hair Extensions Volumizer

Zala

  • Material: 100% remy real human hair
  • Number of wefts: 1
  • Lengths: 16, 20, and 24 inches
  • Shades: 37
  • Pros: Budget-friendly; not too many pieces to insert
  • Cons: Less customizable

While most people immediately associate clip-in extensions with length, they also give incredible volume, making thin hair look more dense. Lots of extensions, including many on this list, come with multiple clip-in pieces so you can customize how many you want to add, but I love that this is one single, lightweight, volume-boosting piece that, when positioned right, will look completely natural. When you start to mess around with clipping multiple tracks all over your head, the probability that one peeks through—especially on someone with thin hair or hair loss—goes up, and only dealing with one piece minimizes that concern. They also offer an extensive shade range with plenty of ombré and balayage colors, along with trendier shades like mocha and chestnut brown for a believable color match.

Best for Fine Hair: BFB Hair Classic

BFB Hair Classic

$495

BFB Hair

  • Material: 100% remy real human hair
  • Number of wefts: 10
  • Lengths: 21 and 24 inches
  • Shades: 29
  • Pros: Stay clipped into hair securely; lots of shades to choose from (29!)
  • Cons: Pricey

A fine-haired friend of mine asked for my recommendation for clip-in extensions to wear on her wedding day and BFB immediately came to mind after trying them years ago. (They served her well, and she looked stunning on her big day.) I put them to the test again for good measure and found that their clips fit super securely but didn’t pull on my fine hair, nor did they feel like they were going to slip out, which can sometimes happen on less-than-thick strands. Even without applying a full head of the seven wefts of 100% remy hair that come in the pack, my hair was noticeably fuller. A little BTS tidbit for you: The brand was founded by influencer Amber Fillerup who initially grew her following by creating swoon-worthy braided hairstyles that I normally wouldn’t be able to achieve with my finer strands. After braiding with these clip-ins, I was finally able to replicate some of her looks.

Best Ponytail: Luxy Hair Ponytail

Luxy Hair Ponytail

$180

Luxy Hair

  • Material: 100% remy real human hair
  • Number of wefts: 1
  • Lengths: 16 and 20 inches
  • Shades: 22
  • Pros: Requires no additional styling; one piece
  • Cons: Wasn’t long enough for my hair

A few years ago I was running late for a wedding and didn’t have time to do anything with my hair, so I decided to try the Luxy Hair Ponytail. It quite literally saved the day and got me so many compliments. The version I had then was a wavy one, which is no longer on their site, but for the sake of this story, I tried their current version—a 20-inch piece of 100% remy real human hair that adds instant volume and polish—and it did not disappoint (it comes in a 16-inch too). It has several prongs that attach on top of your natural ponytail or bun, but my favorite part is the Velcro hair strand that wraps around the base of your pony for an elevated look that ties everything together.

Best Halo: Hidden Crown Halo

  • Original photo from Lisa DeSantis testing Hidden Crown Halo

Hidden Crown Halo

$215

HiddenCrown

  • Material: 100% remy real human hair
  • Number of wefts: 1
  • Lengths: 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, or 24 inches
  • Shades: 31
  • Pros: Just one piece; no clips to deal with; application is quick and easy once you know what you’re doing
  • Cons: First application takes a bit to figure out; wire may be noticeable at the hairline

Unlike clip-in extensions, a halo, such as the Hidden Crown, comes in one piece with a larger-sized weft attached to a piece of wire with an sliding microbead that sits on the crown of your head like a halo. So instead of clipping individual wefts of hair at your roots, the wire sits snugly at your hairline. And to be honest, it’s easy to see how people wear theirs every single day—it makes for easy in and out, and the difference it makes is huge…once you get the hang of it, that is.

The downside was that the halo took the most time and effort to figure out how to place for the first time. I watched a YouTube video to figure out how to adjust the wire to the shape of my head and then used the tiny pair of pliers it comes with to lock everything in place once I was happy with the shape. You finish by tying a knot for security and clipping off any excess wire. Once that’s all said and done, though, you can easily slip the crown on and off for instant volume sans tangling.

If someone is looking for a hair piece to wear daily, this would be a great fit. It’s as easy as adding hair accessories, maybe even easier. I recommend clipping the top one to two inches of your hairline up before applying the halo, then letting those pieces fall loose over the top of the wire for the most seamless application. With 6 different lengths—12, 14, 16, 18, 20, or 24 inches—an impressive 31 shades, and three styles to choose from (a layered version, a lighter-weight style for thin hair, and a thicker option with blunt ends), it’s easy to find your perfect match.

Most Versatile Styles: INH Hair

INH Hair

$109 $88 (19% off)

INH

  • Material: Japanese synthetic fiber
  • Number of wefts: Braid is one piece
  • Lengths: Braid is 34 inches
  • Shades: 28
  • Pros: More budget-friendly than other options; time-saving because of prestyled extensions
  • Cons: Made of synthetic material, so not as luxe as some others

Besides the pony attachment, there are other styles of clip-ins, such as braids, buns, and bangs, or wefts styled into beach waves or a bouncy blowout. Because most clip-in extensions recommend you avoid frequent heat styling in order to maintain their integrity, it’s nice to have them come prestyled for you. The braid comes split into three ready-to-braid sections that you’re able to blend into your own hair for the most natural-looking style.

Best for Curly Hair: Bebonia Curly Clip-In Extensions

Bebonia Curly Clip-In Extensions

$194

Bebonia

  • Material: 100% remy real human hair
  • Number of wefts: 6
  • Lengths: 16, 18, and 20 inches
  • Shades: 10
  • Pros: Great for adding volume
  • Cons: Curl type might not be exact match for some

These came highly recommended by curly-haired tester Kelsey who said, “They’re amazing! I never thought I’d find extensions that match my hair so well.” She also mentioned that these are so good that she’ll be wearing them at her upcoming wedding. It’s easy to see why these curly clip-in extensions receive such praise, as they come in several different curl types, from looser waves to tighter ringlets. You can also choose between two thicknesses of hair—medium and thick—to mirror your natural curls.

Best Natural Hair: Bellami Silk Seam Textured Clip-Ins

Bellami Silk Seam Textured Clip-Ins

$370

Bellami

  • Material: 100% remy real human hair
  • Number of Wefts: 10
  • Lengths: 16, 20, and 24 inches
  • Shades: 7
  • Pros: Offers styles for textured hair that were previously not catered to; Blends well with 2C–3B textures
  • Cons: Pricey; With so many wefts, can feel heavy

With three curl types—3A spirals, 3C ringlets, and a relaxed blowout texture—you can choose the pattern that best matches your own. Celebrity hairstylist Lacy Redway is an ambassador for the brand’s textured clip-ins and says, “Having accessibility to textures that I can pull from, and the broad color range, is so important to me.” She notes that she’s previously had difficulty styling clients and celebs/models on set with textured hair types due to limited options. And WITH beautiful, rich shades ranging from ash brown to chocolate brown, finding your perfect match has never been easier. The hair is also sealed to help preserve its shape and protect against humidity.

Frequently asked questions

What are the top things to look for when it comes to finding the right clip-in extensions?

AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

Celebrity hairstylist Bradley Leake says it’s important to look for clip-ins that will match the texture and tone of your natural hair. Start with identifying your texture, as curly extensions won’t blend with straight hair and vice versa. In terms of hair color, while you may be “blonde,” there are many different shades within the blonde color family, and although you can usually get away with going a shade or two off—because it can look like highlights or lowlights when mixed with your natural color—it’s not so easy to mix tones. If your tone is a cooler, ash blonde or platinum blonde, then a buttery warm blonde will present as a noticeable difference. “Length also matters—if you have short hair, it’s better to go for 14- to 18-inch extensions so you don’t get that obvious disconnect between your hair and the added length,” he says. Leake also recommends looking for “remy human hair, which means all the cuticles are aligned, so it tangles less, and double-drawn if you want thick ends that look super luxe.”

What are the different types of extensions, and which are best for different needs?

AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

Leake says there are three main types of noncommital extensions: clip-ins, halos, and fill-ins. According to him, clip-ins are best for adding instant volume or length, while halos are ideal for fine or thinning hair. Fill-ins, however, are “perfect for adding fullness to certain areas, like the front or sides, especially if your hair naturally grows thinner there.” He says, “If someone has very fine or fragile hair and is worried about clips staying put or causing damage, I’d suggest a halo or a few lighter-weight clip-in pieces—skip the full set.”

How should you apply clip-in extensions?

AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

“Clip-ins hold best when the hair at the root isn’t squeaky clean,” explains Leake. He recommends applying them on second-day hair or using a light mist of texture spray or dry shampoo at the root. “You can also gently tease the section where the clip will go to create a little cushion and ensure it grips well,” he says. In terms of the physical application of your clip-ins, he says, “Start at the base of your head and move up in sections. Make sure each weft lies flat and the clips are snapped securely.” For the most seamless finish, enlist the help of a hot tool to style the faux hair and your own together. Doing so will make “the natural hair and extensions flow as one.”

How do you keep clip-ins in good condition?

AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

“Treat them like luxury fabric,” says Leake, which means don’t overwash them. Every 6 to 10 wears should be good—look out for noticeable build-up. In terms of hair care, “always use sulfate-free shampoo and a gentle hydrating conditioner, and let them air-dry flat on a towel,” he says. And if you use hot tools on them, always use a heat protectant. “For storage, I love using a hanging extension bag or laying them in a silk pouch so they don’t tangle or get dusty,” he says.

How we tested

AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

To determine the best clip-in hair extensions, we considered the different reasons why someone would be looking to use clip-in hair extensions such as adding length, volume, or testing out a different hair trend or style. We researched dozens of clip-ins and considered the extension material, shade range, lengths, styles, and more. Then we tried them ourselves. Our Glamour testers evaluated these clip-in extensions based on ease of application, appearance of the wefts, and their look and feel once applied.
