PHOENIX — An elementary school in south Phoenix will start remotely on Monday due to air tests related to roof construction, it announced.
Kyrene de la Sierra Elementary School, part of the Kyrene Elementary School District and located near Loop 202 South Mountain and Desert Foothills Parkway, posted a notice on its website notifying parents and students of the short-notice change of plans.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we have made the difficult decision to temporarily close the Kyrene de la Sierra campus during this phase of roof construction through fall break,” the notice read. “Students will learn remotely, beginning … August 4, and for the rest of the week, while we work to establish alternate campuses for in-person attendance.”
Because of roof construction, air tests revealed “elevated particulate levels,” per the notice.
It notes this doesn’t make it inherently unsafe for students, but the school “will not take any risks with staff and student health” as official tests are completed over the next 5-7 days.
More details as Valley elementary school plans to start remotely
Students won’t return to the campus until after fall break, even if the pending tests reveal normal levels.
They will begin classwork virtually for the first week and will not be marked absent if they’re unable to attend virtually. Support will be offered for those in need of technological assistance, with more information on how coming later.
For families who miss the message, transportation will still be provided to the school, where students will be supervised until they can be picked up.
