The Philadelphia Phillies swung one of the biggest trades of the trade deadline when they acquired Jhoan Durán from the Minnesota Twins.
Durán made his Phillies debut on Friday night, and his entrance from the bullpen drew plenty of attention, even though it was no different than his entrance when he was on the Twins.
Durán entered to a roar of Phillies fans with their phone flashlights on, with a remix of “El Incomprendido” by Farruko and “Hot” by Pitbull and Daddy Yankee playing as he made his way to the mound. Durán told USA Today’s Bob Nightengale about the difference between his entrance with the Twins versus the Phillies.
“Here, I’ve got a chance to win the World Series,” Durán bluntly stated.
He’s not wrong. There’s a reason the Twins had a fire sale at the trade deadline. The team entered Sunday at 51-59, with the postseason seemingly out of reach. Durán, meanwhile, finds himself on a team that has had World Series aspirations for the last few years.
The Phillies needed a closer after Jose Alvarado’s PED suspension made him ineligible for the postseason. Jordan Romano and Matt Strahm were not the answer at closer, but Durán can be.
He is under club control through 2027, so he will be able to play a big role in the Phillies’ World Series chase for the next few seasons.
