Homeowners said they’re fed up after several burglaries were reported in the Hollywood Hills and San Fernando Valley areas overnight, with some residents who decided to take matters into their own hands.

Early Saturday morning, a burglar broke into a Hollywood Hills home, but was confronted by a resident armed with a gun.

James Marzullo, a Hollywood Hills resident, said he and his neighbors have been strengthening security measures at their homes while also hiring private security to patrol their neighborhood.

He said the increase in reported burglaries has left many neighbors fearful for their safety.

“We take pride in our city and it’s been turned upside down,” Marzullo told KTLA’s Jennifer McGraw. “I don’t feel like there are enough police forces around, especially when you get into the hills.”

A second burglary was reported at a Van Nuys home around 3:30 a.m. and a third break-in occurred at a Sherman Oaks home at 9:30 p.m. the night before.

For those living in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood, they said they were grateful that no one was hurt during the ordeal. The suspect in that case was later arrested. However, the fear of possible break-ins in the future has left residents on edge.

Marzullo said he wants to see more law enforcement in his community and stronger penalties for home invasion and burglary crimes.

“I appreciate [officers] for holding this guy and getting him arrested now,” Marzullo said. “Now, let’s see if our [district attorney] locks him up or just sends him home tomorrow night.”

Police advise residents to ensure their homes are well-lit at night to deter thieves and to report any suspicious activity they may see on their street.
