A La Habra mother of six was sentenced to one year in jail and two years of probation after intentionally running over a 13-year-old boy who had gotten into a fight with her son, according to media reports.

Norma Alcazar, 49, was sentenced Friday and taken into custody immediately afterward—more than seven years after the incident and nearly four months after an Orange County jury convicted her of assault with a deadly weapon and child abuse, the Orange County Register reported.

During the sentencing hearing, she reportedly turned toward the victim’s mother and said, “I want to apologize for any harm my actions caused,” according to the Register. The boy’s mother reportedly broke into tears.

“I hope you are sincere about that,” Orange County Superior Court Judge M. Marc Kelly told Alcazar. “You impacted a lot of people.” Before being led out of the courtroom, the O.C. Register said an emotional Alcazar embraced her family.

Prosecutors said Alcazar was driving a Ford Expedition in February 2018 when she spotted the teen who had bloodied her son’s nose in an after-school altercation. She first “bumped” him with her vehicle, the Register reported, but he stayed on his feet and tried to run across Harbor Boulevard.

Alcazar allegedly drove after him, veered onto the sidewalk near Harbor and La Habra boulevards, and struck him again, breaking his leg and pinning him into a bush. Two of her sons then got out of the SUV and punched the injured boy before leaving him screaming in pain, prosecutors said.

“She doesn’t call 911. She doesn’t check to see if this kid is OK,” Deputy District Attorney Neal Albright said during sentencing. “She doesn’t know if this kid has internal injuries. She doesn’t know if he is bleeding out.”

Alcazar’s attorney argued that she mistakenly believed she was protecting her children.

Judge Kelly noted that Alcazar had no prior criminal record and opted against the two-year prison term sought by prosecutors. In addition to jail time, she was ordered to complete an anger management program and had her driver’s license suspended.

With good behavior, Alcazar’s time in custody may be reduced. Her two sons were arrested in connection with the incident, but it is unclear if they were ever charged.
