A 21-year-old woman who was shot and critically wounded in San Bernardino County earlier this week was carrying a shotgun and ignoring commands when deputies opened fire, authorities said.

The incident occurred when deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday at a home on the 8700 block of Syracuse Road in Lucerne Valley, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department stated.

Several people were found arguing in the street and were being detained by deputies when the suspect appeared “out of the darkness” carrying a shotgun, the Sheriff’s Department stated. “Zimmer ignored multiple commands by deputies to put the weapon down and a lethal force encounter occurred.”

Zimmer was struck multiple times and taken to a local hospital. She remained in critical condition at the time of Thursday’s news release.

No further details about what prompted the initial disturbance call or why Zimmer was carrying the shotgun were provided.

The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division has assumed the investigation.

Anyone with further information regarding the incident was urged to contact the Specialized Investigations Division at 909-890-4904. Callers who wish to remain anonymous should contact We-Tip at 1-800-782-7463.
