Ray Winstone is set to receive an Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award at the Sarajevo Film Festival later this month.

The prolific British actor, whose credits include Black Widow and King of Theives, is being honored for his contribution to the art of cinema. His more recent credits include Netflix title Damsel and British indie A Bit of Light.

“He is an actor who has captivated audiences for five decades with his great talent and undeniable presence,” said Sarajevo Film Festival director Jovan Marjanović. “With honesty and intensity that resonates far beyond the screen, he has given us many unforgettable characters. It is a real pleasure to present an Honorary Heart of Sarajevo to Ray Winstone.”

Winstone added: “Our passion for great stories and exceptional films is what brings us together. The Sarajevo Film Festival continues to champion cinema that transcends spectacle, offering depth and meaning. I look forward to seeing you in Sarajevo.”

In 2007, Winstone received the Richard Harris Award for Outstanding Contribution at the British Independent Film Awards in recognition of his roles. His debut film was in Alan Clarke’s 1979 drama Scum and he went on to star in films such as Franc Roddam’s Quadrophenia, Ken Loach’s Ladybird and Martin Scorsese’s The Departed.

Winstone also took the lead role in Gary Oldman’s biographical drama Nil By Mouth, for which he won a British Independent Film Award for Best Actor and earned a BAFTA nomination. He also starred opposite Ben Kingsley in Jonathan Glazer’s Sexy Beast.

Further credits include Jawbone, Cold Mountain and Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as well as TV series Great Expectations and Henry VIII.

He can next be seen in Guy Richie’s The Gentlemen on Netflix.

The 31st edition of the Sarajevo Film Festival takes place August 15-22, 2025.
