The San Diego Padres came into the trade deadline with a few massive holes on their roster, but A.J. Preller seems to be working tirelessly to fix these holes before the trade deadline passes.
The Padres reached a deal with the Athletics to acquire superstar closer Mason Miller for a loaded package of prospects. This move shows how eager the Padres are to win this year.
Following this massive trade, the speculation began to grow that the Padres could look to trade closer Robert Suarez now that Miller will take his place in the bullpen. This idea could make sense as the Padres would be upgrading at closer while also getting younger and cheaper.
But it’s no guarantee the Padres will cut ties with Suarez.
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale recently reported the Padres have no plans to trade Suarez following the massive news that they were adding Miller to the bullpen.
“The Padres have no plans to trade closer Robert Suarez, giving them the best bullpen in baseball. They also may keep starter Dylan Cease, after all, with J.P. Sears giving them plenty of depth. Once again, the Padres are all-in,” Nightengale wrote in a post to Twitter/X shortly after the Miller trade.
While it could make sense for the Padres to cut ties with Suarez, the team could also look to use him alongside Miller as a dominant duo for the backend of games.
If the Padres are going to go all in at the trade deadline, they shouldn’t hold back any punches. Acquiring Miller is a huge deal, but trading Suarez shortly after would be a blow to the bullpen.
If San Diego wants to chase down the Los Angeles Dodgers, it’s going to need all the help it can get. Keeping Suarez on the roster makes the bullpen a lot better in San Diego.
