The Chicago Cubs have desperately needed to add pitching to their roster for months. They came into the season with a massive hole in their rotation and have yet to fix it. With Justin Steele and Jameson Taillon battling injuries, Steele out for the season, the void in the starting rotation has only gotten worse.
At the trade deadline, the Cubs have been connected to a lot of different names. Sandy Alcántara has been linked closely to the Cubs for months now, but there’s an even better name on the market that Chicago is pursuing: Washington Nationals ace MacKenzie Gore.
New York Post’s Jon Heyman recently reported the Cubs were pursuing a deal for Gore, despite the idea that the lefty is going to be next to impossible to make a trade for.
A trade for Gore would need to be a massive one, considering he’s an ace with over two years of affordable team control left on his deal.
Starting pitchers typically net a haul on the trade market, so Gore’s value is going to be high anyway. Pair that with his incredible ability and Cy Young potential, and the Cubs are looking at quite an uphill battle to land the southpaw.
A deal would likely begin with one of the team’s top pitching prospects and/or outfield prospect Owen Caissie.
Caissie is likely to be moved if the Cubs want to swing a monster trade like this because of his talent and the fact that he’s big league ready.
It seems unlikely that Chicago can pull this trade off, but anything can happen. The San Diego Padres just shocked the baseball world by landing Mason Miller. The Cubs could be the next club to shock the baseball world.
