Dungeons & Dragons is kicking off a new organized play campaign at Gen Con this weekend that goes back to the earliest days of the 50-year-old tabletop role-playing game. Legends of Greyhawk promises players “less rules, more fun” as they adventure through the world designed by D&D co-creator Gary Gygax, which was revived for the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide.

Numerous adventures set in different parts of Greyhawk are running during North America’s largest gaming convention, which was founded by Gygax in 1967. Players all start at level 1 and will reach level 3 after playing at least three adventures. Players only need to use the free D&D Beyond Basic Rules to get started, though D&D Beyond account holders will receive special perks like tradeable magic item cards.

Legends of Greyhawk will run at several other conventions this year before being made widely available for organized play in 2026. Decisions players make in these early adventures will shape the future of the campaign, which is entering its beta phase. The campaign will grow and evolve based on the decisions players make at events worldwide, shaping the future of the campaign and the way that players experience the Grayhawk setting.

Greyhawk isn’t the only setting getting the spotlight at Gen Con. A panel at 3 pm. July 31 will offer a preview of the Heroes of the Forgotten Realms and Adventures in the Forgotten Realms books releasing later this year. Gen Con attendees will also be able to try out the upcoming Heroes of the Borderlands starter set, which is designed to appeal to board game players by including plenty of miniatures and cards along with easy-to-run adventures.
