HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), has awarded more than $337,000 in state grants to support improvement projects at local airports.
The grants are part of ALDOT’s Alabama Airport Improvement Funding Program, which provides financial assistance and technical support to public-use airports across the state.
The projects being carried out include land acquisition, runway upgrades, facility repairs, maintenance and operational improvements.
“Local airports are critical to connecting our communities and supporting Alabama’s economy,” said Frank Farmer, Bureau Chief of ALDOT’s Aeronautics Bureau. “This funding helps strengthen infrastructure, improve safety and support essential air services in all parts of the state.”

Hartselle-Morgan County Regional Airport (Hartselle)
Crews will reseal runways 18 & 36 and apron – Phase 1 and 2. $11,150 will be provided through the state, the same amount will also come from Airport Sponsor Funds. The FAA will provide $423,700 for the project. This bring the total to $446,000 for this project.
Huntsville Executive Airport – Tom Sharp, Jr. Field (Meridianville)
Crews will reconstruct GA north apron and extend east/west drainage culverts. $30,012 will be provided for the project through the state. The same amount will be covered by Airport Sponsor funding. The FAA will provide $1,140,501. This will bring the total to $$1,200,525 for this project.
Northwest Alabama Regional Airport (Muscle Shoals)
Runway 12 & 30 safety are under construction. $21,765 will be provide by the state for the project. $21,766 will be covered by Airport Sponsor funding, and the FAA is set to provide $827,085, bringing the total to $870,616.
Russellville Municipal Airport (Russellville)
Crews will reseal the main apron and install a precision approach path indicator system. $11,982 will be provided through the state for the reseal and the installation. $11,983 will be put up from Airport Sponsor funding. The FAA will provide $455,335 and this will bring the total to $479,300 for the project.
Cullman Regional Airport-Folsom Field (Cullman)
Crews will reseal a terminal apron and construct a midfield taxiway – Phase 3. The State and Airport Sponsors are providing $10,873 each for the project. The FAA is putting up $413,179 which brings the total to $434,925.

The Alabama Airport Improvement Funding Program was established to assist airport owners with the planning, construction and maintenance of aviation facilities. ALDOT may also provide engineering and technical support as needed for approved projects.
