The Toronto Blue Jays are in the midst of a strong season and will probably add even more at the trade deadline after acquiring Seranthony Domínguez.
However, one of their key players, shortstop Bo Bichette, is in the final year of his current contract. Blue Jays writer Mitch Bannon for The Athletic believes a deal won’t be coming any time soon.
“The Jays don’t love negotiating with players midseason,” wrote Bannon. “With the run this team is on, I think that would only further dissuade them from starting talks with Bichette right now.”
It may dissuade the team from attempting negotiations, but it doesn’t mean Bichette won’t want to try and get the ball rolling. While he obviously wants the team to continue doing well, his contract negotiations are always on the back of his mind.
Bannon believes Bichette’s best plan would be to solely focus on baseball.
“It’s in Bichette’s interest to play out this season (especially as he seems to be heating up right now) and see how high he can push his value,” wrote Bannon. “I think the Jays are content to let him do that before getting serious about a deal in the winter.”
Spotrac values his next deal to be a seven-year deal worth just under $148 million, but whether he gets it remains to be seen. Bichette’s contract negotiations are a story to watch as the remainder of the season unfolds, and the Blue Jays push for the playoffs.
