The Brussels metro was partially closed Tuesday afternoon as police investigate a bomb threat in the city center.

“There are three stations closed — De Brouckere, Bourse, Anneessens — because of an ongoing police search, the alert started around 3:35 p.m. and the metro service is not interrupted, but the trains are not stopping at the said stations,” a spokesperson from metro operator STIB said.

Brussels capital police spokesperson Linda Camarero-Verde confirmed that the search is still ongoing at De Brouckere and Anneessens stations, but the security perimeter at the Bourse and the Palace cinema has been lifted.

Brussels has been grappling with terror attacks, shootings and drug violence for several years now.

More than a dozen shootings have been reported in the Belgian capital so far this year, resulting in at least two deaths. That comes after a year in which 92 shootings claimed the lives of nine people, according to official figures.

The city center bomb threat alert comes barely two weeks after Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin announced the government will merge Brussels’ six police zones into one in a bid to curb widespread drug violence.
