Several people were injured in a shooting at a casino in Reno, Nev., early on Monday, and the police said that the gunman had been taken into custody.
Chris Johnson, a spokesman for the Reno Police Department, said that the adult male suspect involved in the shooting at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino was taken to the hospital and that the conditions of the people who were injured were not immediately known.
Devon Reese, a Reno City Council member, said in a telephone interview that he had received reports that at least two people had been killed and four people had been taken to the hospital, including the gunman.
“My understanding is that there are two reported fatalities,” he said.
He said three other people were treated: one for anxiety, another for an injury that took place while running from the scene, and one person who was shot in a finger.
Mr. Johnson said he had no information about a motive for the shooting.
Renown Regional Emergency Room, a trauma center in Reno, was treating several patients for gunshot wounds, according to a hospital spokeswoman, who said that medical privacy laws prohibited her from releasing details about their conditions.
The police said on social media that there was no threat to the community.
Officers responded to the shooting at 7:25 a.m. outside the resort.
Phil Cordle, 49, a National Guard member from Elk Grove, Calif., who was staying at the resort, said that he was in a meeting when someone told him that there was an active shooter.
“I just decided just go into the nearest place, try to get locked, wherever,” Mr. Cordle said in an interview. “The bathroom stall.”
Suzanne Jones, 67, a retired nurse from Sacramento, said that she and her daughter, who is also a nurse, were in their rooms at the resort when an announcement was made over a speaker for people to shelter in place.
“They said to all guests, something to the effect of, ‘You are safe,’ ” Ms. Jones said. “ ‘Just stay indoors. Stay indoors.’ ”
An initial report said the shooting was in the valet area. Chief Kathryn Nance of the Reno Police Department told reporters that an “officer-involved shooting” took place before the suspect was taken into custody.
