Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena will host a free live jazz concert on Friday, August 2, as part of a summer concert series co-sponsored by the Pasadena Conservatory of Music. The event will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. and is open to the public.
The performance will feature the Pasadena Conservatory of Music’s Jazz Faculty & Friends, including Nicole McCabe on saxophones, Aaron Janik on trumpet, Jonathan Richards on bass, Sam Hirsh on keys, and renowned drummer Roy McCurdy, whose career spans collaborations with Cannonball Adderley, Sonny Rollins, Nancy Wilson, and Ella Fitzgerald, among others.
“This is a rare opportunity to hear a jazz icon perform in an intimate, community setting,” organizers said.
Vroman’s Bookstore, founded in the 1890s by philanthropist Adam Clark Vroman, has long served as a cultural hub in Pasadena. Originally funded through the sale of Vroman’s own book collection, the store was born out of a personal loss and a desire to enrich the community. In addition to its well-stocked book inventory, the store features curated sections for gifts, stationery, and jewelry, and is home to 1894, an in-store bar known for literary-themed cocktails.
The bookstore has earned numerous accolades, including Publishers Weekly’s “Bookseller of the Year” and “Best Bookstore in the San Gabriel Valley,” and has made appearances in TV and film, including Modern Family, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and Parks & Recreation.
The August 2 concert coincides with an ongoing summer sale at the store, offering discounts across various departments.
