HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Weather Authority is closely monitoring the heat threat for the area for the upcoming week. A heat dome will expand across the United States, trapping the extreme heat and humidity at the surface.

The Weather Authority has issued an Impact Day through Wednesday evening because of the dangerous heat and humidity. Air temperatures are forecast to range from the low to upper 90s. The heat index will surpass 110 degrees at times.

As of Sunday evening, a Heat Advisory is in effect for all of North Alabama and Southern Middle Tennessee until 9 p.m. Tuesday. Areas along and west of I-65 could be upgraded to an Extreme Heat Warning on Tuesday, with the heat index values forecast to surpass 110 degrees for two consecutive hours or longer.

As the heat dome builds above the surface, an area of high pressure will be positioned southwest of the area. The clockwise rotation around the high-pressure system leads to a continuous flow of hot air and deep tropical moisture into the region.

Dew points will continue to rise well into the 70s by Tuesday, creating very uncomfortable conditions.

The heat index on Monday will reach 110 degrees in Huntsville and then surpass that on Tuesday. Wednesday will be nearly as warm as Tuesday, with the heat index value nearing 110 degrees.

Be sure to stay safe in the heat this week, and take actions to protect yourself from the heat. Be sure to stay hydrated, limit time spent outside, take breaks from the heat, and never leave kids or pets in hot cars.

Stick with The Weather Authority for the latest on the heat alerts this week.
