FanSided’s Chris Landers recently pitched a blockbuster trade idea that would send Minnesota Twins stars Willi Castro, Danny Coulombe, and Jhoan Duran to the New York Yankees in exchange for prospects Carlos Lagrange, Cam Schlitter, Rafael Flores, and Roderick Arias.
“Go big or go home. It seems increasingly unlikely that the Cleveland Guardians will part with Emmanuel Clase, which means that Jhoan Duran becomes the best arm who might potentially be available at this year’s deadline,” Landers wrote. “Duran’s combination of wipeout stuff (from his triple-digit heater to his high-90s splinker) and years of team control make him an awfully enticing addition. And as it happens, he’s not the only reliever Minnesota could dangle over the next few days: Coulombe is set to hit free agency this offseason and has a 0.93 ERA on the year, handling lefties and righties with equal aplomb.
“What might it take to bring both of them to the Bronx? Multiple top-100 prospects figure to be the bar for Duran alone, so New York probably has to include bright young arms like Lagrange and Schlittler, each of whom have been sensational this year.”
Would this make sense for both sides? There’s a lot to unpack here.
For the Yankees, these three additions would fill some of the bigger holes on the roster in a huge way. The addition of Duran would solidify the backend of the Yankees’ bullpen as one of the best units in baseball. Adding Coulombe into the deal would make their bullpen as dangerous as any.
Castro would work well as a versatile platoon infielder. After adding Ryan McMahon, the Yankees don’t need to trade for an additional infielder, but Castro would help the team as a depth piece.
The Twins don’t need to aggressively sell like this, but with the prospect return in question, they’d be forced to listen. However, it remains quite unlikely Minnesota would package all these players in one deal rather than shipping them to multiple teams in separate trades.
