Los Angeles County health officials are urging residents to check their measles immunization status following confirmation of a case linked to an out-of-county traveler who passed through LAX while infectious earlier this month.

Public Health said the traveler visited several public locations while contagious, including:

  • July 5, 2025: LAX. Flight details remain under investigation.
  • July 5, 7:30 p.m. – July 7, 1 p.m.: Hilton Los Angeles Airport, 5711 W. Century Blvd.

Individuals who were at these locations during those times may be at risk of developing measles between 7 and 21 days after exposure. Health officials are identifying and notifying potentially exposed individuals to assess their risk and prevent further spread.

Measles symptoms include:

  • High fever (may spike to more than 104°)
  • Cough
  • Runny nose (coryza)
  • Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)

Officials emphasized that those who were exposed but remain symptom-free after July 26 (for airport exposure) or July 28 (for hotel exposure) are no longer at risk.

Local health officials are asking the public too:

  • Review their immunization and medical records to determine if they are protected against measles, especially before international travel or domestic travel in areas experiencing measles outbreaks.
  • If they are pregnant, have an infant, have a weakened immune system, or are unimmunized, they should contact and notify their health care provider as soon as possible about a potential exposure, regardless of vaccination history.
  • If symptoms develop, stay at home and avoid school, work, and large gatherings. Call a healthcare provider immediately.

Los Angeles County’s last measles case involving a resident occurred in June.

The case comes as the U.S. sees a rise in measles infections, with 1,319 cases reported nationwide as of July 22, primarily concentrated in Texas, New Mexico, Kansas, and Oklahoma. The majority of those infected were unvaccinated or had unknown vaccination status. Twelve percent required hospitalization, and three deaths have been reported.
