After the Hunt, Luca Guadagnino‘s topical drama starring Julia Roberts, will open the 63rd New York Film Festival on September 26.

The film centers on a Yale professor (Roberts) whose comfortable life is thrown into chaos after her longtime colleague and friend is accused of sexual assault. Ayo Edebiri, Andrew Garfield, Michael Stuhlbarg and Chloë Sevigny also star.

Earlier this week, Venice Film Festival organizers announced that the film will have its world premiere there, screening out of competition. It is slated to debut in U.S. theaters on October 10.

Film at Lincoln Center, which organizes the festival, said Guadagnino and members of the cast are set to be on hand as the film has its North American premiere at Alice Tully Hall. Guadagnino has had several of his films, including Call Me by Your Name, Bones and All and Queer, screen at the New York festival. The event typically offers a handful of world premieres. But it primarily exists to showcase a few dozen noted selections from the world’s top festivals, serving as a key cultural event on New York City’s fall calendar and an important platform on the heels of Venice, Telluride and Toronto.

“I have always found the New York Film Festival to be an arbiter of global cinema. For over 60 years it has been a festival that makes audiences open their minds and hearts to the most daring and compelling global cinema from both established and emerging filmmakers,” Guadagnino said. “To be invited to open the 63rd edition is a tremendous responsibility and honor.”

After opening night, the New York festival will run through October 13. Limited quantities of passes for the fest are already available, with single tickets going on sale on September 18.

“We are excited to open this year’s festival with Luca Guadagnino’s latest, which confirms his status as one of the most versatile risk-takers working today,” said Dennis Lim, the festival’s artistic director. “Brilliantly acted and crafted, After the Hunt is something rare in contemporary cinema: a complex, grown-up movie with a lot on its mind that also happens to be a deeply satisfying piece of entertainment.”

Lim chairs the NYFF Main Slate selection committee, which also includes Florence Almozini, Justin Chang, K. Austin Collins, and Rachel Rosen.
