Three police officers were ambushed in a shooting on Wednesday afternoon outside Cleveland, leaving two of them in critical condition, the authorities said.
The gunfire erupted around 1:15 p.m. near an industrial park in Lorain, Ohio, according to Jack Bradley, the city’s mayor, who said in a phone interview that one suspect was dead.
Mr. Bradley said that he could not confirm some initial news media reports that a second suspect was still at large.
He did not have details about what had led to the shooting or how a suspect died, and referred questions about the confrontation to law enforcement officials, who did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
In a post on social media on Wednesday, Senator Jon Husted of Ohio wrote that the officers had been “ambushed.”
“There is no place for this kind of violence in our state or country,” Mr. Husted, a Republican, wrote.
The two most seriously wounded officers were flown by helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, the closest level-one trauma center, Mr. Bradley said.
The third officer was being treated at a hospital in Lorain, he said.
The three officers are members of the Lorain Police Department, which the mayor said has a total of about 100 officers.
Bernie Moreno, Ohio’s other U.S. senator, wrote on social media that his team was monitoring the situation.
“Attacks on law enforcement are unacceptable,” Mr. Moreno, a Republican, said.
