HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Habitat for Humanity helps millions each year by either improving or building a home for those in need, and that goes for our community right here in North Alabama, too.
Despite the summer sun and 90-degree temperatures, volunteers spent time working on houses on Tuesday morning.
“We’re hanging the last of the swinging doors of the interior doors in the back bathroom, and the master bedroom,” Arthur Hargrove Jr., a long-time volunteer with Habitat, said. “We’ve installed closet shelves in the pantry and the coat closet and the linen closet. We’ve had people installing baseboards and trim and generally doing cleaning.”
The team is building five different houses on the same street. These are projects they started in February through April.
On Tuesday, they had a special group of volunteers. Employees with AFS, which is a North Alabama groundworks company, came out to help.
“Normally, we get to come to a house when there’s an issue that needs to be fixed,” Joseph Hindman said. “Today, we’re volunteering our time to build homes for people…you know, that may be, handicapped in a way or need some extra assistance.”
Hargrove said they are grateful when anyone with a construction background can lend a hand.
“They generally have good construction knowledge, so when we get a group like that, we can get a lot done quickly,” Hargrove said.
He explained that every few years, they open up applications for people in the area to become Habitat families.
That’s when a group of volunteers gives their time and building materials to put the homes together and sell them at a discounted rate for those who need them.
Because a considerable percentage of the house is built by volunteers, the cost is then lower than it would be if it were built by a contractor on the open market.
All of the houses on Lake Drive NW are a part of Habitat for Humanity. Volunteers said the houses they worked on will be ready at different times, but some people will be able to move in as early as next month.
