HAZEL GREEN, Ala. (WHNT) — Madison County School System leaders broke ground on a new middle school Monday. Superintendent Ken Kubick said that recent growth in the Meridianville, New Market, and Hazel Green areas has increased enrollment in MCSS schools.

“Meridianville Middle School is overcrowded as it is, as well as Hazel Green [High School] and Moore’s Mill Intermediate,” said Superintendent Ken Kubick.

To help accommodate that growth, the MCSS Board of Education unanimously approved plans for the $53.5 million facility. It is set to open its doors for the 2027-2028 school year.

Kubick said that once Hazel Green Middle School is built, Meridianville Middle School will transition into an intermediate school for 5th and 6th graders. 7th and 8th graders will feed into the new school. Moore’s Mill Intermediate will become an elementary school, freeing up space across the district.

“What this project is going to do is it’s going to provide a few years where we’re going to be able to have growth in all those schools,” he said.

Kubick said overcrowding can cause a strain on teachers and extra space will improve the learning experience all around. He said Hazel Green Middle School’s approximation to Hazel Green High will also help ease traffic congestion on the parkway.

MCSS is also working on a 12-classroom addition at Hazel Green High School and upgrades to its athletic facilities, including an artificial turf football field.
