Summary

  • Kevin Feige confirmed new X-Men and Iron Man/Tony Stark casts will enter the MCU after Avengers: Secret Wars
  • Secret Wars will be about “beginnings,” introducing new mutants to the merged timeline
  • Robert Downey Jr. will return as Doctor Doom in Secret Wars, which premieres December 17, 2027

Kevin Feige revealed that a new cast portraying X-Men and Iron Man/Tony Stark will enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe following 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars.

The studio head revealed that fans will see a new set of mutants for its Jake Schreier-directed X-Men film, following the merging of timelines. This means that the likes of Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden and Kelsey Grammer (the X-Men cast of the early 2000s and 2010s) who will return for Avengers: Doomsday will not be reprising their roles for the new standalone title.

“We’re utilizing that [story] not just to round out the stories we’ve been telling post-‘Endgame,’ just as importantly — and you can look at the at the ‘Secret Wars’ comics for where that takes you — it very, very much sets us up for the future,” Feige said via Variety. “‘Endgame,’ literally, was about endings. ‘Secret Wars’ is about is about beginnings.”

“They have been a place to tell stories about young people who feel different and who feel Other and who feel like they don’t belong,” he said of the X-Men comics. “That’s the universal story of mutants, and that is where we’re going.”

Feige added that new actors will also play Tony Stark and Captain America/Steve Rogers, comparing it to James Bond and Superman‘s resurrections in film. “That will always be the case,” he shared. While he understands that Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, who played Iron Man and Cap, respectively, will always hold a special in fans’ hearts, reviving their characters is doable. “I think it’s hard for anybody to do that when an actor has done such a great role,” he continued. “How are they going to ever replace Sean Connery [as James Bond], right?”

Secret Wars will see RDJ return to the MCU, only this time as Doctor Doom rather than Tony. The film is scheduled to premiere December 17, 2027.
