Scottie Scheffler won the Open Championship with a score of 17-under, four strokes ahead of runner-up Harris English. The new Champion Golfer of the Year gave another example of his extraordinary superiority in men’s professional golf, earning standing ovations from the crowd at Royal Portrush.

Scheffler carded a final-round 68, with five birdies and a double bogey on the eighth hole. That was precisely his only difficult moment of the day, when he sent his tee shot into a fairway bunker and, as he tried to clear it with his second shot, the ball hit the edge of the slope and rolled straight back to his feet.

The rest of the round was more of the good old Scheffler. He hit 57% of the fairways in the round, reached 83.3% of the greens in regulations, and didn’t three-putt a single hole. Just as he said he would the day before.

Scheffler thus claimed the fourth major title of his professional golf career and the third leg of the Career Grand Slam. Only the US Open remains for him to complete this tremendous feat.

The World No. 1 will have the extraordinary chance to complete it on his 30th birthday, as his birthday, June 21, coincides with the final round of next year’s US Open at Shinnecock Hills.

The local hero at Royal Portrush, Rory McIlroy, charged hard during the final round, but ultimately only managed to finish tied for seventh at 10-under.
