An inmate in a California state prison was allegedly killed by two other inmates on Friday evening, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation announced.
Per a CDCR media release, the three inmates – Boris Bonilla, Carlos J. Duran and Brian J. Diguez – were in a dayroom at the Folsom State Prison just before 6:30 p.m. when the former two allegedly started attacking Diguez.
“Staff quickly quelled the incident and immediately initiated life-saving measures on Diguez,” CDCR’s media release states. “He was taken to the prison’s triage and treatment area where he was pronounced deceased by Folsom Fire Department personnel at 7:09 p.m.”
A pair of inmate-manufactured weapons were recovered at the scene, CDCR said.
Diguez, 34, was originally received from Los Angeles County on July 25, 2016 after being sentenced to 21 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter with an enhancement of street gang act an in commission of a serious felony.
His alleged assailants, Bonilla and Duran, were moved into restricted housing after the incident, and movement in the area where the attack occurred has been limited to facilitate the CDCR investigation.
The 48-year-old Bonilla was most recently received from L.A. County on May 17, 2012 after being sentenced to life with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder with enhancements for intentional discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury or death and street gang act in commission of a serious felony.
Duran was sentenced to two years in prison for a parole violation for vehicle theft with prior vehicle-related theft convictions. The 32-year-old was most recently received from Santa Clara County on Feb. 3, 2022.
Folsom State Prison is California’s second oldest prison and primarily houses medium security general population Level II and Level III male inmates.
