Police announced Saturday the arrest of a former Laguna Beach hotel general manager who is accused of sexually assaulting a minor, as well as being involved in narcotics sales and illegal firearm possession.
The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Phelton Calhoun of Laguna Niguel, was the former manager of La Casa Del Camino. According to the Laguna Beach Police Department, officers began investigating on July 15 after receiving a report of a sexual assault involving a 17-year-old girl. Calhoun was arrested the following day, July 16.
“The incident occurred in Laguna Beach about three weeks earlier, where the juvenile victim stated to police that Calhoun raped her while she was intoxicated,” LBPD stated. Police did not specify whether Calhoun was a hotel employee at the time or where the incident occurred.
Detectives and Special Enforcement Team officers began investigating the report, soon identifying Calhoun as the suspect, and, in addition, learning that he sold cocaine and carried a firearm.
“LBPD served a search warrant at his residence, where additional narcotics for sale and firearms were seized during the operation,” the department’s statement read.
Police took Calhoun into custody without incident and booked him into the Laguna Beach Police Department Jail, where he is being held without bail. He was charged with one count of rape of an intoxicated person, one count of statutory rape of a minor more than three years younger, one count of sending harmful material to a minor, possession of narcotics for sale and possession of a firearm and narcotics.
