The Baltimore Orioles have endured an abysmal season coming off their second consecutive playoff appearance last season. With the trade deadline approaching, the Orioles are taking calls on left-handed starting pitcher Trevor Rogers, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Rogers is a former first-round draft choice from the Miami Marlins in 2017, and after a horrid four starts after joining the Orioles last season, has increased in his trade value by posting a 1.53 ERA in six starts this season.
As for his contract status, Rogers is under team control next season before becoming a free agent in the following offseason. Rogers was an All-Star and finished second in Rookie of the Year voting in his rookie campaign of 2021.
Rogers would be an adequate depth addition for a contender’s rotation down the final stretch of the season. Rogers missed the beginning of the season with a knee injury but has returned and been a strong addition to the Orioles’ rotation.
Rosenthal also mentioned that while they are taking calls on Rogers, they also are holding off on prioritizing deals that include players controlled past this season. This means that while they are listening and discussing potential trades, the top priority is clearing out the expiring contracts before it is too late.
The Orioles’ intentions look to be building for a return to the postseason next year, and with the apparent focus on trading expiring contracts, the likelihood of Rogers being moved is low, but for the right price could find himself on a contender in August.
