The Milwaukee Brewers are once again in a competitive postseason race.
The Brewers aren’t the dominant force in the National League Central that they’ve been for the last few years, but they’re still a threat for the division title and the wild card race.
Milwaukee could be set up to make a few huge moves this year.
Despite Milwaukee contending at the All-Star break, Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently suggested the Brewers could trade their ace, Freddy Peralta, ahead of the trade deadline. Rymer noted the odds of a trade happening are low, but still acknowledged the possibility.
“More so than with Bregman and the Red Sox, though, there’s a financial reality at play with Peralta and Milwaukee,” Rymer wrote. “He’s in the last guaranteed year of his contract, and his attempts to get a new deal have reportedly gone nowhere. It may be that the notoriously frugal Brewers are wary over making a deal they might regret.
“If the Brewers traded Peralta in the middle of a contention run, it would surely be an unpopular move … but not an unprecedented one. Though the Josh Hader trade of 2022 didn’t go over well, it happened all the same and the club is no worse off for it three years later.”
It seems unlikely the Brewers would consider trading Peralta unless a contender like the Boston Red Sox would be willing to trade Jarren Duran to Milwaukee.
But in a selling move, meaning Peralta for prospects, it’s doesn’t make much sense. Still, a deal could happen, as we saw with Josh Hader a few years ago.
As of now, Peralta is a Brewer and it’s likely going to stay that way through the end of the season. But don’t be surprised if a contending team takes a huge chance on him and offers the Brewers a package of players they can’t refuse.
