The Toronto Blue Jays need to go after a starting pitcher ahead of the trade deadline to take advantage of the hot streak they’re on this season.
The starting rotation is the biggest hole on Toronto’s roster, but there are seemingly a lot of potential trade targets set to land on the block this month.
Bryan Jaeger of Jays Journal recently urged the Blue Jays to pursue a massive trade for Texas Rangers ace Jacob deGrom if the Rangers opt to make him available ahead of the trade deadline.
“If the front office decides to sell, they could greatly benefit from the lack of sellers and reap valuable assets for their ace, Jacob deGrom,” Jaeger wrote. “The only issue is that deGrom is under contract until after the 2027 season, making $115.1 million over these three seasons, and has a $20 million club option for 2028 that could turn into a $37 million player option based on performance criteria.
“DeGrom, being 37 and oft-injured, could help Blue Jays General Manager Ross Atkins start a conversation about acquiring the two-time Cy Young Award winner. Over his previous five seasons, the righty hadn’t exceeded 97 innings due to injury. Atkins has two ways to approach this trade, but it’d likely result in the Blue Jays eating the entire contract and sending one or two lower-tier prospects.”
The first thing to note is that this idea seems very unlikely. DeGrom hasn’t been mentioned in any verified rumors at this point, and the Rangers likely see him as a crucial piece of their franchise. Plus, his contract would make him nearly untradeable.
But if the Rangers happen to want to trade him in order to hit a franchise restart, the Blue Jays might be one of the only teams in baseball that’s willing to take on his massive contract.
It’s not very likely, but stranger things have happened in baseball.
