The Cincinnati Reds could shockingly end up as buyers at the trade deadline, but they likely wouldn’t buy in the same capacity as the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees.
What I mean by this is the Yankees and Dodgers can afford to go all-in by acquiring rental players at the trade deadline in order to make a postseason push this season. The Reds don’t have that same luxury. But that doesn’t mean Cincinnati has to be a seller. It just means the front office could target players with team control.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today recently reported the Reds were showing “strong interest” in a trade for a few top relievers with team control. Nightengale linked the Reds to Minnesota Twins relievers Griffin Jax and Jhoan Duran.
“The Philadelphia Phillies have been extensively scouting Minnesota Twins relievers Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax of the Minnesota Twins, hoping to acquire at least one of them,” Nightengale wrote. “The Twins also are drawing strong interest from the Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Cincinnati Reds.”
The Reds make a lot of sense in this instance. With Terry Francona coming out of retirement to manage the team and Elly De La Cruz seemingly getting better with each passing day, the Reds need to commit to winning now.
Giving up a haul of prospects for two star relievers to add to the backend of the bullpen would be a huge decision for Cincinnati. But it would set up the Reds for a potential postseason run this year. Even if the Reds fall short of the postseason, Jax and Duran would be under team control for a few more years.
It would be expensive and a bit out of character for the Reds front office, but it’s certainly a move that makes a lot of sense.
