With Hulu freshman Paradise landing a first Outstanding Drama Series Emmy nomination and the streamer’s Only Murders In the Building earning its fourth consecutive Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy nomination, This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman found himself a nominee in both fields.
He is the creator, executive producer and showrunner of political thriller with a sci-fi bend Paradise, headlined and executive produced by Sterling K. Brown, and executive producer of murder mystery OMITB, created and executive produced by star Steve Martin and showrunner John Hoffman, with Martin Short and Selena Gomez also starring and exec producing.
The feat puts Fogelman in a rare group of double Emmy nominees in the top series categories. In terms of creator/executive producers, the one known previous example is David E. Kelley, nominated for both The Practice (drama series) and Ally McBeal (comedy series) in 1998 and 1999, winning Outstanding Drama both years and Comedy in 1999.
Non-writing producer David Bernad was a double nominee in 2023 as an executive producer of HBO’s The White Lotus in the Outstanding Drama Series race and Freevee’s Jury Duty on the comedy side.
Fogelman’s position is unique as he is creator of Paradise and non-writing EP on OMITB but, with his showrunner background — including strong comedy pedigree — his creative input on the latter likely goes beyond that.
“Obviously anyone who works in television knows that these shows are made by hundreds of people,” Fogelman told Deadline about his the double nominations.
“In the case of Only Murders: John Hoffman, Jess Rosenthal, Kristin Bernstein and our incredible lead trio do all the heavy lifting with that talented cast and crew,” he added. “With Paradise: I am lucky enough to make that show with my Los Angeles team, the bulk of whom I spent 6 years making This Is Us with. These show nominations highlight the collective work of both groups and that makes me as happy as I’m capable of being.”
Before OMITB, Fogelman’s This Is Us was a fixture in the Outstanding Drama Series field, the last broadcast series to accomplish that, for now. With his 2025 noms for Paradise and OMITB, except for 2020, Fogelman has been nominated for Outstanding Drama or Comedy (or both) every year since 2017.
