PHOENIX — A Tucson man was sentenced this week to 6 years in prison for human smuggling and drug charges, authorities said.
Jon Christian Schacht previously pleaded guilty to one count of possessing fentanyl with the intent to distribute it as well as one count of conspiring to transport undocumented migrants for profit, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona.
The 37-year-old was sentenced to two separate sentences of 72 months and 24 months, which he will serve concurrently, prosecutors said.
Why was Tucson man sentenced for human smuggling, drug charges?
Schacht managed an organization in southern Arizona with the sole purpose of smuggling undocumented migrants into the U.S., prosecutors said.
Additionally, he personally transported noncitizens as part of his work for this organization. He also conspired and coordinated with coconspirators to further transport the undocumented migrants deeper into the U.S.
While he was managing the organization’s migrant smuggling operations, Schacht was simultaneously involved in a drug trafficking conspiracy, prosecutors said. He transported 42 kilograms of fentanyl to Phoenix rom Tucson.
