New Canaan, Conn. | $2.295 million
An updated Victorian built in 1872, on 0.2 acres
This three-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bathroom house sits on one of New Canaan’s oldest streets, five minutes on foot from the city’s Metro-North station. One well-known neighbor is the Glass House, designed by the architect Philip Johnson and now owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. A grocery store is within walking distance, as are the New Canaan Racquet Club and a stretch of Elm Street with coffee shops, a bookstore and a European bakery.
By train, Stamford is half an hour away and Grand Central Terminal is less than 90 minutes away. New Haven is one hour by car.
Size: 2,300 square feet
Price per square foot: $998
Indoors: A white wood fence lines this home’s front yard, with a gravel driveway on one side.
The covered front porch has wood columns, and from there a door opens to the foyer and a staircase to the second floor. Wide-plank floors run into the living room, which has a windowed nook overlooking the side yard. An intricately-detailed ceiling medallion is original, and on the other side of an arched doorway is a dining room with four-over-four windows.
On the other side of the dining room is the kitchen, which has a paneled refrigerator and a walk-in pantry. An island in the kitchen accommodates two bar stools, and around the corner is a breakfast room with black-and-white marble tiled floors. A half bathroom is off the foyer.
All three bedrooms are on the second floor. The primary suite is big enough for a king-size bed, has high ceilings and space for a reading chair in front of a bay of windows. The attached bathroom has a glassed-in shower.
The two other bedrooms have space for queen-size beds, and the bathroom they share has a combined tub and shower. The lowest level has a family room with the same wide-plank floors as the rest of the house, plus a mudroom with tiled floors, a full bathroom and a laundry room.
Outdoor space: The grassy backyard is sloped, but has a flat area next to the barn that fits a set of chairs. The barn has an attached storage shed and could be converted into a garage or a studio. Four parked cars fit in the driveway.

Cave Creek, Ariz. | $2.295 million
A contemporary house built in 2017, on 5 acres
This three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom house, known as the Hidden Valley Desert House, was designed by the architect Wendell Burnette. Meant to bridge the gap between indoor and outdoor space, the home has walls of glass that open to expansive patios and windows facing cactuses that line the property, the mountains and Phoenix Valley.
Hiking trails that lead to the top of Elephant Mountain begin within a 15-minute drive of the house. The center of Cave Creek, including its reproduction of an Old West town, is 15 minutes away. Downtown Phoenix takes an hour.
Size: 2,578 square feet
Price per square foot: $890
Indoors: A steep driveway leads from the road to the house, and outdoor steps rise to the front patio where a door opens to a foyer.
From the foyer, stairs lead to the main level, where an open space has both sitting and dining areas. A half bathroom is at the top of the steps, along with a coat closet. Floor-to-ceiling windows face the desert, and off the sitting area is a smaller room with a wine refrigerator, a built-in fire table and a glass wall that opens to the balcony.
The kitchen, off the living and dining room, has a long island with a built-in electric cooktop. The cabinets were custom-made, and around the corner is a door opening to another part of the patio. Walls on this level are covered with a mix of stucco, resin paper and felt panels.
The primary suite is on this level. Its bedroom has floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking a patio and a koi pond. One wall slides open to a meditation room and the en suite primary bathroom has a wooden Japanese-style soaking tub and a handcrafted wooden sink.
Two additional bedrooms are on the entry level, divided by a sliding wall. One has space for a queen-size bed and the other has a built-in daybed. A bathroom across the hall has a large window above the vanity and a walk-in shower.
Outdoor space: The main patio, at the front of the house, doubles as an outdoor dining room, shaded by a canopy extending from the roofline. The property also includes an enclosed dog run and a two-car garage.

Boise, Idaho | $2.299 million
A 1910 Colonial Revival house, on 0.5 acres
This five-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bathroom house is a few miles from downtown Boise, and sits within a small enclave of homes heated by pipes connected to the city’s underground hot water supply. Kristin Armstrong Municipal Park, on the edge of the Boise River, has a playground, a bocce court and picnic lawns and is half a mile away. The campus of Boise State University is within a five-minute drive. Also five minutes away is the 32-acre Idaho Botanical Garden and a public elementary school is 10 minutes away on foot.
The Boise airport is a 15-minute drive, and Sun Valley is less than three hours away.
Size: 7,122 square feet
Price per square foot: $323
Indoors: The house is set back from the street, behind a half-circle driveway and steps flanked by trees.
Inside, a foyer connects to a formal living room off one side and a formal dining room off the other. The living room has a wood-burning fireplace and windows covered with white shutters face the front and rear. A sunroom off the living room also has a fireplace and trompe-l’œil wallpaper in a library motif.
In the dining room, there’s floral wallpaper above white wainscoting and the ceiling is painted coral. A butler’s pantry connects the dining room and a kitchen with a Thermador refrigerator and granite countertops.
The foyer also includes a half bathroom and a staircase to the second level, which holds four of the five bedrooms. There are two en suite bedrooms. One has an enclosed sun porch, a walk-in closet and a bathroom with a soaking tub and the other has its own wood-burning fireplace. Two additional bedrooms share a full bathroom with a deep soaking tub and a separate shower. All of the bedrooms fit king-size beds.
The fifth bedroom is on the lowest level, along with a space that could be used as a family room.
Outdoor space: Behind the house is a covered deck with steps down to an in-ground swimming pool, which, like the house, is connected to the city’s geothermal heat system. A red brick patio sits on one side of the pool, and on the other side of a detached two-car garage is a lawn surrounded by hedges and mature trees.
