Organizers of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles have released the initial competition schedule, outlining the timing and order of events for what they are calling the most ambitious program in Olympic history.

The Games are scheduled to begin Friday, July 14, 2028, with an opening ceremony held jointly at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The closing ceremony will take place Sunday, July 30, at the Coliseum.

For the first time, the athletics and swimming competitions will switch weeks, organizers said. Track and field events will be held during the first week, while swimming will move to the second week and conclude the Games on Day 16. Marathon events will take place during the final weekend, consistent with tradition.

The first Olympic medal is expected to be awarded on opening day during the triathlon event at Venice Beach.

Day 15 will feature the most medal events, with finals in 19 individual sports and 16 team medal matches scheduled on what organizers called “the single most action-packed day of the LA28 Games.”

“We couldn’t be more excited to mark this moment at exactly three years out from Los Angeles’ third Olympic Games in 2028,” LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover said in a statement. “There is so much to celebrate today … the first look at the Olympic competition schedule that has been meticulously developed to ensure the world’s best athletes can compete in LA. We are energized by today’s milestones and remain focused on the work ahead.”

The schedule was developed in coordination with Olympic Broadcasting Services, international federations and the International Olympic Committee Executive Board.

Additionally, organizers announced that PlayLA, the city’s youth sports initiative supported by LA28 and the International Olympic Committee, has surpassed one million program enrollments. The program offers access to more than 40 Olympic and adaptive sports for children ages 3 to 17.

Los Angeles previously hosted the Olympic Games in 1932 and 1984. This will be the city’s first time hosting the Paralympic Games. Planning for the 2028 Games is being managed by a privately funded nonprofit.

A more detailed version of the Olympic schedule, including specific medal events and gender order, is expected later this year.
