Authorities in Long Beach are investigating the death of a woman found near the Los Angeles River early Sunday morning, in what police say may have been a traffic-related incident.

According to a press release from the Long Beach Police Department, officers were dispatched around 5:20 a.m. on July 13 to a section of the Los Angeles River north of Willow Street, following reports of a deceased individual. Upon arrival, officers discovered a woman lying on the west side of the river’s bike path.

Personnel from the Long Beach Fire Department responded and pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

Detectives with the department’s Collision Investigation Detail said the preliminary investigation suggests the woman may have fallen from a motorcycle or another moving vehicle. No vehicle was found at the scene, and the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.

Police noted that witnesses have been cooperative, but they are continuing to gather information.

The Los Angeles County Department of the Medical Examiner will release the woman’s identity and notify next of kin.

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to contact Collision Investigation Detective David Dougherty at (562) 570-7355. Anonymous tips may also be submitted through LA Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), using the “P3 TIPS” app, or visiting www.LACrimeStoppers.org.
