Anonymous NFL executives, coaches, and scouts have spoken. When it comes to the Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, they do not believe he is currently a top 10 player at his position heading into the 2025 season.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes topped the list, following up with his same status as last season. Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen, Cincinatti Bengals’ Joe Burrow, Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson, and Washington Commanders’ Jayden Daniels fill out the top five.
LA Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, LA Chargers’ Justin Herbert, Detroit Lions’ Jared Goff, Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Hurts, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Baker Mayfield were the rest left within the top 10.
When you slide down past ESPN’s top 10 based on the poll results, a few honorable mentions were revealed. Once again, Prescott was left unmentioned.
It’s not all bad for the Cowboys’ veteran. He was reportedly among six quarterbacks to receive at least one vote within the top 10. It just wasn’t enough to make him an honorable mention, at least. Prescott was placed in a similar group as Kyler Murray, Brock Purdy, Aaron Rodgers, Tua Tagovailoa, and Bo Nix.
Clearly, Prescott has a lot to prove heading into the next NFL season. Before he went down for the year in 2024, Prescott appeared in eight games. He threw 286 passes, completing just 65 percent of his attempts. Prescott had 1,978 yards and threw for 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
When Prescott’s season was over, the Cowboys had a 3-5 record to show for with him under center. It was a weak follow-up showing after Prescott had one of his most impressive campaigns as a pro in 2023.
The memories from two seasons back should help the Cowboys feel confident about Prescott’s ability to bounce back.
In 17 games, Prescott attempted nearly 600 passes. He led the NFL with 410 completions, finding success on 70 percent of his passes. Prescott tossed for over 4,500 yards for the second time in his career. He led the entire NFL with 36 touchdowns and threw for just nine interceptions.
The Cowboys achieved a 12-5 record as Prescott thrived during the 2023 season.
With so much invested in Prescott, the Cowboys need a major season out of their veteran passer to justify his $50 million cap hit. The cost reaches another major number in 2026, going as high as $74 million, according to Spotrac. Prescott is signed through 2028.
