Yankees Pushed to Finally Cut Ties With Struggling 30-Year-Old Reliever

The New York Yankees have to find a way to retool their bullpen and make it better than it has been so far this year.

One way to do that is addition by subtraction. That’s exactly what FanSided’s Thomas Carannante believes the organization should do with Jonathan Loaisiga.

“He’s genuinely been terrible in 2025, and the Yankees made it a priority to pay him $5 million this year and give him an option for 2026 — after he pitched in a grand total of 70 games from 2022-2024,” wrote Carannante. “Multiple injuries. Multiple surgeries. He had one good year in 2021, and that was it.”

So far this season, Loaisiga has produced a 5.01 ERA over 22 games. The 30-year-old righty has fallen victim to giving up home runs as he’s conceded seven in just over 22 innings of work.

While Loaisiga was banged up from 2022 to 2024, he didn’t pitch poorly in those three years. He just couldn’t stay healthy.

“It’s yet another puzzling move by the front office,” wrote Carannante. “The Yankees are not afraid to spend, but fan frustration boils over when they make bad investments and then cap their ability to make moves or upgrade. This is one of those situations because the Bombers passed on better bullpen options, and now likely won’t surrender premier assets to upgrade over Loaisiga at the deadline.”

Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman seem to be trying to get as much out of him as humanly possible even if it means costing the team games in the process. He has all of the tools to succeed, but it’s not coming together for him.

The best thing for both parties would be to separate at the end of the year. New York can find a replacement in free agency while Loaisiga can start fresh with a different organization.
