Though the decision to draft him was met with some controversy, the Philadelphia Eagles bringing in Jalen Hurts proved to be a smart decision for the franchise. He’s emerged as one of the top talents at his position, with some ready to put him in the MVP discussion ahead of the 2025 campaign.
Upon taking over starting duties full-time in his second season, Hurts quickly emerged as a foundational piece to the Eagles franchise. He’s led the offense with his combination of speed and throwing ability, not to mention grown as a leader the whole team rallies behind. Hurts’ strong play has resulted in Philadelphia reaching the Super Bowl twice in his tenure at QB, and capturing a championship last season.
Following a strong performance on the game’s biggest stage, Hurts took home Super Bowl MVP honors. Now, the challenge for him is taking home the award in the regular season.

In a recent column for NFL.com, Grant Gordon cited a list of players who could deliver their respective franchise a regular-season MVP for the first time in the Super Bowl era. The Eagles were among the teams brought up, seeing that they haven’t had one since the 1960s. Due to the rarity of a running back winning MVP, Gordon did not go with Saquon Barkley. Instead, he feels it would be Hurts who would end this drought.
“Hence, if the Eagles are to have a player soar to the club’s first Super Bowl-era MVP, conventional wisdom says it will be Hurts,” Gordon wrote. “In the eyes of many, Hurts had a ‘down’ year before he piloted Philly to a Super Bowl triumph. He was an MVP runner-up in 2022 and was the Super Bowl LIX MVP. Once you’ve made that storied trip to Disney World, grabbing some MVP hardware is assuredly in reach.”

Hurts is by far the top MVP option for the Eagles, seeing that he’s already come close to landing such an honor. After leading Philadelphia to a 14-1 record while throwing for 3,701 yards and 22 touchdowns, he was named a finalist in 2022. However, Hurts ended up being runner-up for MVP to Patrick Mahomes.
Armed with one of the league’s top offenses, Hurts has the firepower around him to put up big numbers in 2025. If the Eagles can put together a dominant regular season, the star QB very well could enter the conversation again.
