Coming into the season, Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara was looked at as one of the top names expected to be on the trade block.
Alcántara was the 2022 National League Cy Young winner and has often looked like one of the best pitchers in baseball. The righty missed all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
But the righty has struggled quite a bit this year. Still, a lot of people hold the expectation that the Marlins will trade him regardless of his performance.
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale recently suggested the Marlins wouldn’t trade Alcántara unless he turns his poor performance around. That’s a stark contrast from the widely believed idea that Alcántara could be dealt either way in the coming weeks.
“Miami Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara may not be traded if he continues to struggle,” Nightengale wrote. “He is yielding a 7.22 ERA this season, and has allowed 19 earned runs in the last 18 innings for a 9.50 ERA.”
Alcántara was one of the worst pitchers in baseball through his first few starts. Then, he had a handful of productive starts. Over his last three starts, he’s been as bad as ever.
With that in mind, there’s a good chance his trade value is lower now than it’s ever been. The Marlins would be foolish to trade away an ace with affordable team control at his lowest value ever.
That would mean, unless the righty turns it around in the coming weeks, he’s likely to remain with the Marlins this season.
