Mariners Expected To Cut Ties With 22-Year-Old Catcher With All-Star Potential

The Seattle Mariners need to take advantage of this season. They have one of the best pitching staffs in the game. With a pitching staff like they have, the team is always going to contend.

But this season, the Mariners also have offense, led by the breakout season from Cal Raleigh. It would be a shame for the Mariners to let a historic season like this go to waste.

With that in mind, the team should be expected to be aggressive at the trade deadline. But if the Mariners are going to hunt trades for talented big leaguers, they’re going to need to cut ties with some top prospects.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today recently suggested the Mariners would cut ties with catching prospect Harry Ford in the coming weeks.

“The best prospects expected to be traded by contenders this month, GMs believe, could be Cubs outfielder Owen Caissie and Seattle Mariners catcher Harry Ford. But Caisse doesn’t want to hear the rumors,” Nightengale wrote.

Ford has a huge bat and All-Star potential. A player like this likely has as much value as any prospect in the sport, barring the top 15 or 20 names on the market, but the Mariners still might trade him this summer.

Trading Ford makes sense for the Mariners for a few reasons.

Obviously, if they’re aggressive at the trade deadline, they’re going to cut ties with a few top prospects. That’s how the business goes.

But Ford is also blocked at the big league level by the aforementioned Raleigh. Raleigh, without a doubt, is the top backstop in the league this season, as it seems like he’s going to push the threshold of 60 home runs.
