The Atlanta Braves early-season struggles have been too much to overcome, and now Atlanta is destined to be a seller this season.
How much the organization sells remains to be seen, but anyone on an expiring contract is more than likely out the door. FanSided’s Zach Pressnell believes slugger Marcell Ozuna should be the first one traded.
“The Atlanta Braves have been one of the more disappointing teams in baseball this season,” wrote Pressnell. “Rather than contending for a World Series, they’re near the bottom of the league. While they still have a lot of talent on the roster, it’s time to start the fire sale.”
“Atlanta needs to trade expiring designated hitter Marcell Ozuna in the coming weeks,” Pressnell added. “Ozuna still has some value on the trade block and could be a fit for any contender looking for an everyday DH. When Ozuna hits free agency at the end of the year, the Braves are unlikely to re-sign him.”
Entering Sunday, Ozuna is slashing .236/.363/.385 for the Braves with a 111 OPS+. The 34-year-old has been a bright spot for Atlanta all season long.
If the Braves were to trade Ozuna, he would have plenty of suitors. Teams like the Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants are looking to add pop to their lineup.
Trading Ozuna would give the Braves a strong return even as a rental. Contenders are likely to overpay for a strong bat at the deadline, and Ozuna is sure to draw a lot of interest.
