The New York Mets have a very talented roster with a loaded starting lineup. But they can still make additions in order to place themselves as favorites in the National League East.
With how competitive the Philadelphia Phillies have been this season, the Mets need to make at least one more blockbuster move if they want to be the favorites in the division down the stretch.
Rising Apple‘s Josh Mayer recently suggested Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran would be a dream trade addition for the Mets ahead of the trade deadline.
“Trading for Duran would provide a similar circumstance to Buxton: Duran adds another bat to the lineup in replacement of Tyrone Taylor in center, and is also one of the best baserunners in MLB,” Mayer wrote. “Duran had a monster breakout in 2024, slashing .285/.342/.492 in 160 games. He’s mellowed down a bit this year, slashing .262/.318/.438 in 93 games, but he remains an above-average hitter who can stay in the lineup consistently.
“With the Mets, Duran would mainly be playing center, which may help him fix his problem. They can also utilize Duran at DH if they want Taylor to guarantee success in the outfield; Jesse Winker’s return from the IL adds to the team’s outfield depth, allowing them to be more flexible with potential acquisitions such as Duran if they want to stick him at DH.”
If the Mets want to add an impact bat with some team control to their outfield, Duran is their guy. He’s a solid defender, though his numbers aren’t great this season.
He’s also a very talented base runner with a solid bat. Adding him to the lineup would give the Mets another solid option to place at the top of their lineup.
New York would need to part ways with some solid prospects to acquire Duran, but it’s certainly an option worth exploring in the coming weeks.
