Not very neighborly: Nearly 60% of Canadians see the US as their biggest threat

Most Canucks see the United States as Public Enemy No. 1, beating out China, Russia and North Korea, a shocking new study reveals.

A jaw-dropping nearly 60% of Canadians said the land of the free was their country’s biggest menace — a dramatic jump from 2019, when 20% said so — according to the Pew Research Center poll of 32,000 people in 25 countries.

“Canada stands out amongst the countries surveyed as a place where views of the US have changed significantly over time,” Janell Fetterolf, senior researcher and lead author of the report, told The Post. “The change in Canada is the largest change we see.”

Close to 60% of Canadians considered the US their biggest threat, three times more than in 2019.

Researchers blame the raging trade war between the two neighbors for the change.

They conducted the poll between January and April, at a time when tensions were running especially high.

“There was a lot of media attention on US-Canada relations, including President Trump referring to Canada as the 51st state and proposing tariffs on Canadian imports to the US,” said Fetterolf.

Roughly 75% of Canadians who named the US said it poses a “great deal of threat to their economy,” while about 50% said the home of the brave poses a national security threat.

People could name any country that came to mind — researchers didn’t ask them to pick from a list.

In true love-hate fashion, 55% of Canadians also said they considered their southern neighbor to be their biggest ally.

Mexico was the only other country surveyed where a majority named the US as their biggest threat — as many as 68% said so, up from 56% in 2019.

Americans named China as their biggest threat, and most countries in Europe pointed fingers at Russia.
